’28 Years Later’ Passes $100 Million at the Worldwide Box Office

Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later is off to a strong start at the box office in its second week of release, with the infection epic crossing a major global milestone over the weekend.
Domestically, the film made $3 million this past Friday, $3.8 million on Saturday and $2.9 million on Sunday from 3,444 locations. That’s $9.7 million for the film’s second weekend here in the States, bringing its total domestic gross to $50.3 million through Sunday.
28 Years Later has also scared up $52.7 million at the international box office, bringing the film’s worldwide total to an impressive $103 million at the time of this article being written.
That makes 28 Years Later the highest grossing installment in the three-film franchise to date, with 28 Days Later ending its run with $74.9 million back in 2002 and sequel 28 Weeks Later coming along five years later and ending its own worldwide run with $72.3 million.
The catch here is that the budget for 28 Years Later was a reported $60 million, making it a far more expensive endeavor than either of the previous two movies. But it’s on the path to profitability, which bodes well for Boyle and Alex Garland’s plans to turn this tale into a trilogy. The second installment, Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, has already been dated for theatrical release on January 16, 2026, and that film’s box office report will likely decide whether or not the third film in the planned trilogy ends up becoming a reality.
For what it’s worth, Boyle has teased that Cillian Murphy’s character from 28 Days Later will play a pivotal role in the third film, which is being used as something of a bargaining chip to help secure funding to finish out the trilogy. But again, it all depends on whether or not The Bone Temple ends up being a hit for Sony in theaters. Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
In 28 Years Later, “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
