The Houston Broadway Theatre is bringing an updated version of American Psycho: The Musical to Houston next month, featuring a new script and a revised score from co-creators Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina).

Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis and inspired by the cocaine-fueled Manhattan of the 1980s, the musical focuses on Patrick Bateman, a young investment banker who seems to have it all. The trouble is he has homicidal urges and his friends keep disappearing.

The novel was previously dramatized with a 2000 film adaptation starring Christian Bale, and has a new adaptation on the way.

Sheik and Aguirre-Sacasa’s American Psycho musical made its Broadway debut in 2016, playing a brief, 54-performance run at the Schoenfeld Theatre. The musical proved a bigger success overseas, completely selling out its world premiere run at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2013, with Matt Smith (Starve Acre, His House) leading the production.

The new production, set for September 2–14 at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, will feature new scenes, new characters, and an updated score from the original creators.

“Roberto and I have very much enjoyed working with the young and talented team at Houston Broadway Theatre, and we are both looking forward to their new vision of the show. There may be some changes, both big and small… but I personally enjoy it when a new set of creatives mixes things up a bit. It’s sure to deliver a new iteration of the show that is cool, dangerous, thought-provoking, and very entertaining. Maybe bring a translucent raincoat just in case,” said composer Sheik in a statement.

The Houston production is directed by Joe Calarco and stars Robert Lenzi as Patrick Bateman.

The musical’s cast also includes Paul Schwensen as Paul Owen, Jaedynn Latter as Jean, Tyce Green as Timothy Price, Kaye Tuckerman as Patrick’s Mother, Owen Claire Smith as Evelyn Williams, Michael Evan Williams as Craig McDermott, Jacquelyne Paige as Courtney Lawrence, Iván Moreno as Luis Carruthers, Kiser Shelton as David Van Patten, Ethan Achee as Sean Bateman, Ronnie Blaine as Detective Kimball, Morgan E. Kyle as Sabrina, Bella Ibis Valdes as Victoria, Kathy Liu as Vanden, Bianca Mio as Christine, Lydia Ruth Dawson as Female Swing, and Ben Knight as Male Swing.

“I couldn’t be more excited that Houston Broadway Theatre is bringing American Psycho to bloody life in Houston,” said book writer Aguirre-Sacasa in a statement. “I’m particularly thrilled to be working with director Joe Calarco and the first-class team at HBT on a revised version of our musical, which builds on everything we’ve learned about this piece from its London and Broadway incarnations. It’s an audacious undertaking, but truly inspiring, and I’m grateful to the bold, risk-taking company at HBT for giving us this incredible opportunity.”

The revised and reimagined musical is also returning for an encore run at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2026.
