‘The Waves of Madness’ – The World’s First Side-Scrolling Horror Film is Now Available on Digital

Classic horror influences and retro gaming aesthetics combine in The Waves of Madness, the first side-scrolling horror movie from multihyphenate actor, writer, and director Jason Trost (The FP series, All Superheroes Must Die).
The Waves of Madness is now available to rent or own on Digital.
It follows “a special agent dispatched to investigate a distress call from a round-the-world cruise. Upon arrival, the agent finds the ship eerily abandoned and haunted by a malevolent force that distorts reality and warps sanity into terror.”
In other words, this side-scroller combines 1930s Lovecraftian horror with retro video game style.
Trost stars alongside Ryan Gibson and Tallay Wickham.
Shot for just $20,000 in a single studio apartment with a crew of three, The Waves of Madness is a testament to DIY indie filmmaking. Trost also completed the entire post-production himself in Final Cut Pro, using practical effects, in-camera trickery, and hand-built digital matte backgrounds to evoke a dreamlike, side-on horror world.
“I wanted to make something that felt like it crawled out of another dimension,” says Trost. “This film is for anyone who’s ever dreamed about making a movie with nothing but a crazy idea, a few good friends, and the will to see it through. The Waves of Madness is proof that you don’t need a big budget to make something unforgettable-you just need vision.”
The side-scrolling horror movie was also released on Blu-ray on June 5 from Umbrella Entertainment, though it’s currently sold out.
The Waves of Madness made its world premiere at Nightmares Film Festival in October, where it won Best Thriller Feature and Best Cinematography at Nightmares 2024.
