Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Dogtooth’ 4K Restoration Releases in Theaters This Month

Director Yorgos Lanthimos‘ breakthrough feature, the unsettling 2009 domestic psychological thriller Dogtooth, is clawing its way back into theaters this month with a 4K restoration, Indiewire has announced today.
Kino Lorber will release the 4K restoration of Dogtooth in NYC at IFC Center on June 20 before rolling out to select cities nationwide.
In Dogtooth, “A controlling, manipulative father (Christos Stergioglou) locks his three adult offspring in a state of perpetual childhood by keeping them prisoner within the sprawling family compound. The children are bored to tears in spite of distractions like Christina (Anna Kalaitzidou), an employee of their father’s who makes regular visits to sexually service the son (Hristos Passalis). Increasingly curious about the outside world, the older daughter (Aggeliki Papoulia) hatches a plan to escape.”
Lanthimos co-wrote the film with frequent collaborator Efthymis Filippou (The Killing of a Sacred Deer).
Graphic artist Vasilis Marmatakis, Lanthimos’ other long-time collaborator, created a new poster for the 4K restoration below, along with a new trailer.
Indiewire reports that Dogtooth “was restored in 4K from the 35mm camera and sound negatives by Boo Productions and mk2 Films at Asterisk* Post and I Hear Voices sound studio. Color grading was provided by Gregory Arvanitis and Thimios Bakatakis, with digital sound restoration by Landros Ntounis.” Lanthimos supervised the restoration process.
Wesley Lara wrote of the director’s breakout film, “Dogtooth may not be Yorgos Lanthimos at his most refined, but there is a rawness to his artificial world in the film that is far scarier than people will give it credit for. A type of horror that does not seek to scare or even unsettle us. The horror is in the concept of children living in a fake world and how casually they go about believing the lies of their parents. The kind of horror that can bleed chuckles from the audience in response to incestuous games, cat violence, human barking, and physical violence stemming from VHS tapes.”
Also on the way from Lanthimos is Bugonia, an adaptation of Save the Green Planet! set for theatrical release this Halloween.
