Joe Hill’s ‘The Black Phone’ Gets a Signed Limited Edition Release from Suntup Editions

While we wait for the release of Scott Derrickson’s Black Phone 2 this coming October, Bloody Disgusting has learned that the original tale from Joe Hill is getting a deluxe edition release from our friends over at Suntup Editions. It was Hill who wrote original short story The Black Phone, and Suntup has announced a limited release that’s available for pre-order right now!

The gorgeous deluxe edition from Suntup features a new exclusive afterword by C. Robert Cargill and four color illustrations by award-winning artist Reiko Murakami.

All copies are printed letterpress from metal type, and are signed by Joe Hill and Reiko Murakami. The Numbered and Lettered editions are also signed by C. Robert Cargill, who co-adapted Hill’s short story The Black Phone into the hit 2021 movie.

Suntup Edition previews, “A haunting tale of isolation and resilience, Joe Hill’s The Black Phone is a masterclass in short-form horror and the inspiration for one of the most critically acclaimed horror films of the past five years.” It was originally published in Hill’s acclaimed debut collection, 20th Century Ghosts.

Thirteen-year-old Finney Blake is abducted by a sadistic killer. Held captive in a locked basement, Finney discovers a disconnected black rotary phone mounted to the wall. At first glance, it seems useless. But then the phone begins to ring. One by one, Finney begins receiving calls from the killer’s previous victims—boys who were once in his place and who didn’t survive. In 2021, the story was adapted into a screenplay by Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill. The film received rave reviews from critics and became one of the top ten highest-grossing films in the United States for seven consecutive weeks. Cargill has written a new afterword exclusive to the Suntup edition.
