Horror icon Bruce Campbell made the move behind the camera back in 2005 with horror-comedy Man with the Screaming Brain, and it was two years later that he directed himself again in meta movie My Name Is Bruce. 18 years later, Campbell is back in the director’s chair!

Now in post-production according to IMDb, Bruce Campbell directed a comedy-drama titled Ernie & Emma, and he also stars in the film as a salesman grieving the loss of his beloved wife.

Produced by Bruce Campbell’s real-life wife Ida Gearon, Ernie & Emma was both written and directed by Campbell, and he opens up about the project in a chat with The Horror Zine.

“Initially, it was out of a desire to see if I could make a one character movie,” Campbell explains the origins of the upcoming Ernie & Emma. “Eventually, with influences of my dad as a Detroit ad guy and the place where I currently live, Ernie was born.”

He describes the film’s couple, “They were married for a long time, so there was lots of history, baggage and unresolved issues. The journey comes with many revelations, good and bad.”

Campbell also notes in the same interview with The Horror Zine that his efforts to get Ernie & Emma made and sold may pull him away from the Evil Dead franchise for a bit. While Campbell is retired from playing Ash Williams, he has been involved in all recent installments as a producer, though his role behind the scenes on the next two movies may be more limited.

Campbell explains, “I was very involved in 2013 and Evil Dead Rise. Currently, I’m on a multi-year odyssey to complete and sell my next flick Ernie & Emma around the world, so I won’t be as involved in the next two that come down the pike.”

The next installment in the franchise is titled Evil Dead Burn, with Sébastien Vaniček (Infested) directing. Another new movie has also been announced, with Francis Galluppi directing.

But back to Ernie & Emma. Bruce Campbell stars in the film alongside familiar faces including Ted Raimi and Cerina Vincent (Cabin Fever), with Robin McAlpine in the role of Emma.
