One of the top movies at the box office right now is Steven Spielberg’s JAWS, a staggering bit of information when you remember that the horror classic is FIVE DECADES OLD.

JAWS was re-released into theaters for the film’s landmark 50th anniversary this past Labor Day Weekend, and despite the fact that everyone on the planet has already seen the movie countless times over, it still managed to scare up $8.2 million across the weekend. Here in the United States, the 50th anniversary re-release passed $10.5 million from Thursday-Tuesday!

The selling point for this particular re-release was the fact that JAWS is now playing on IMAX and 4DX screens, with those premium ticket prices promising a whole new way to experience one of the greatest movies ever made. As filmmaker Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Suitable Flesh) raves on Instagram, “JAWS 3D in 4DX is possibly one of the greatest post-converted 3D films ever made. It forces you to see things you’ve never seen before without feeling like a gimmick. It really is like seeing the film again for the first time. It’s pure movie magic.”

Grab your tickets to see JAWS on the big screen while you still can!

A $10+ million first week for a 50-year-old movie is needless to say a huge testament to the enduring power of JAWS, which was watched by 3+ million people when it aired on NBC as part of a special presentation earlier this summer. Why remake a classic movie when the original is still generating such healthy box office and home video profits on its own, eh?

In the classic film, “When the seaside community of Amity finds itself under attack by a dangerous great white shark, the town’s chief of police (Roy Scheider), a young marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss), and a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) embark on a desperate quest to destroy the beast before it strikes again.

“Featuring an unforgettable score that evokes pure terror, Jaws remains one of the most influential and gripping adventures in motion picture history.”

Spielberg’s 1975 original summer blockbuster was written by Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb, based on Benchley’s 1974 novel. You can also grab the 50th Anniversary 4K release.
