NEON’s Body Horror Movie ‘Together’ Debuts With $10 Million in First Week

NEON made the interesting decision to release their new body horror movie Together in theaters beginning on Wednesday, July 30, with some locations playing the film as early as this past Tuesday night. It has proven to be a smart decision, as NEON can now boast about the fact that Together scared up over $10 million at the U.S. box office in its first week of release.
From the Tuesday through Sunday frame, Together pulled in $10.8 million at the domestic box office, $6.8 million of which was made during the traditional weekend frame.
NEON reportedly spent $17 million to acquire the film. It’ll need to keep making money in order to reach profitability in theaters, but director Michael Shanks’ feature debut is off to solid start after just a handful of days. Together was released in 2,302 theaters nationwide.
NEON’s Chief Distribution Officer Elissa Federoff said in a statement to Deadline, “It’s very exciting that the studios are out there bringing great titles and filling theaters. As a result, this summer, as an independent, you have to be very intentional about the film you’re releasing and its marketing campaign. You have to put spend behind; you need to be creative and make audiences understand why this is the one that they want to go see this weekend.”
Real-life spouses Dave Franco and Alison Brie star in NEON’s new body horror nightmare Together, and the acclaimed film is now playing exclusively in theaters nationwide.
“Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other.
“With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural foe threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh.”
Meagan Navarro wrote in her review out of Sundance, “Its unique blend of awkward romantic dramedy and cosmic body horror yields no shortage of crowd-pleasing moments and horror freakouts that left the rowdy Sundance audience laughing and screaming in equal measure.”
