Shudder Immortalized 10 Years of Horror with a Friday the 13th Tattoo Party [Event Report]

Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium horror streaming service, turns 10 this year and has been celebrating accordingly with a year’s worth of fan events, programming, custom merchandise, and more, dubbed Shudder10.

That included a special Friday the 13th Shudder Anniversary Tattoo Party at Wild Heart Tattoo Parlor in Brooklyn, New York, where friends, family, alum, and Shudder fans descended to commemorate 10 years of horror programming with ink.

Shudder gave the artists at Wild Heart Tattoo Parlor free reign to design flash inspired by the streaming service’s expansive catalog, and they more than delivered. Willing participants could select from eleven sheets of flash inspired by films like Dangerous Animals, Late Night with the Devil, Mandy, Revenge, Tigers Are Not Afraid, The Dark and the Wicked, and In a Violent Nature, or series like “Creepshow,” “The Creep Tapes,” and “The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula,” to name only a few.

Bloody Disgusting ventured out to Brooklyn in celebration of Shudder’s milestone anniversary and to partake in the Friday the 13th tattoo event. While Peachfuzz from “The Creep Tapes,” V/H/S, and Late Night with the Devil proved to be fan favorites among the chosen flash designs, this writer opted to honor one of Shudder’s scariest offerings: Demián Rugna’s Terrified.

Read on below for a peek at my new tattoo, along with a few other Shudder tattoos the streaming service unveiled on Instagram.

The Adams Family’s John Adams (Hellbender, Where the Devil Roams, Hell Hole) was among those attending and said, “I got a tattoo of a heart that Zelda drew at the 10th anniversary party. It’s not a perfectly symmetrical heart… it’s kind of strange and misshapen, and the artist even asked if he should fix it and make it right.

“That’s what we love about Shudder; they celebrate the odd, imperfect, troublesome beauty and ugliness of life, and it saturates the films they champion. Shudder cultivates the best of the horror community and, in so doing, makes us all a part of a seriously wicked family that our little family loves being a part of!”

Look for the Adams Family’s latest, Mother of Flies, to debut at Fantasia next month.

Terrified

“10 years of Shudder is invigorating. We’re a small team in relentless pursuit of horror movies that excite us. It’s nice to take stock and celebrate a little,” said Shudder curator and Senior Vice President of Programming and Acquisitions, Sam Zimmerman. “For me, the future of Shudder is directly entwined with the filmmakers we know and love and those we haven’t met yet, all in that pursuit of frightening and distinct horror. In our tenth year, we have the scariest V/H/S yet, reteam with Peachfuzz, and get to introduce wild new visions like The Ugly Stepsister and Best Wishes to All. That’s what Shudder is about, and that’s how we plan to remain.”

Why yes, that is indeed a sly tease at the upcoming eighth installment of anthology series V/H/S nestled within Zimmerman’s heartfelt statement.

It also speaks to Shudder 10 as a whole: we may be rapidly approaching the year’s halfway point, but Shudder isn’t slowing down the festivities. There’s a lot more in store this year.

Independent Film Company’s VP Festivals and Publicity, Danielle Freiberg, previews, “We kicked off this year’s celebrations with a Shudder second line in New Orleans at the Overlook Film Festival tied to halfway to Halloween, and looking forward, we have some Shudder10 exclusive merch coming soon, an activation at San Diego Comic-Con, continuing to celebrate Shudder past and present with the Shudder Showcase Screening Series (of upcoming releases) and the Shudder Anniversary Selects Series with arthouse theaters across the country all year, a series of 10 exclusive posters in partnership with Mutant, we are sponsoring Fantastic Fest opening night, involvement in New York Comic Con, a big fall slate of exciting films and more events to be announced!”

Happy 10th birthday, Shudder!
