‘Weapons’ – Warner Bros. Reportedly Considering an Aunt Gladys Prequel Movie

After the smash hit box office success of Zach Cregger’s Weapons, you may be wondering if Warner Bros. and New Line are considering a sequel. After all, one successful movie often leads to another. But according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter this week, it’s not a sequel that’s currently being talked about around Hollywood. Rather, it’s a prequel movie.

The Hollywood Reporter is hearing that WB & New Line have been talking to Cregger about a potential PREQUEL to Weapons centered on the Aunt Gladys character, played by Amy Madigan in the film. We won’t spoil any major Weapons plot details here in this article, but anyone who has seen the film knows that Gladys is a pivotal – and mysterious – character.

While this may seem like an idea that’s completely out of left field and wildly unnecessary, it’s interesting to note that Cregger actually did cut some material from the Weapons script that would’ve delved a bit into the backstory of Aunt Gladys. It sounds like this Weapons prequel would expand upon the material that would’ve served as the film’s “Aunt Gladys” chapter.

“Now with the movie’s wild success, that lost chapter would be expanded into a full-length story,” THR explains. “Sources say no deals have been made, nor is there any timeline.”

But the next film from Zach Cregger is a fresh take on the Resident Evil franchise, with Cregger directing the film for theatrical release on September 18, 2026. So definitely don’t expect him to dive right back into the world of Maybrook anytime soon. And keep in mind that while early conversations are underway, a Weapons prequel certainly isn’t a greenlit project at this time.
