‘Shell’ – Elisabeth Moss Stars in Body Horror Comedy That Looks Like This Year’s ‘The Substance’ [Trailer]

Director Max Minghella’s Shell will be released by Paramount in select theaters and on Digital October 3, and the official trailer has been released this afternoon. Watch below.
In the film, “Desperate to reclaim her career, once-beloved actress Samantha Lake (Elisabeth Moss) is drawn into the glamorous world of wellness mogul Zoe Shannon (Kate Hudson) —only to uncover a monstrous truth beneath its flawless surface.”
Shell is rated “R” for “violent content, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity and language.”
Meagan Navarro wrote in her festival review for Bloody Disgusting, “Much like Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, Shell explores the hells of aging in Hollywood with vibrant style and biting wit. Yet they couldn’t be further removed in just about every way. While Shell centers around an aging actor who embarks on a risky beauty regimen in a desperate bid to retain relevancy, Minghella opts to use it as a vehicle to craft an escapist love letter to ’90s cinema.”
“The Dark Castle Logo in the opening credits heralds a zany, entertaining salute to the ’90s,” Meagan’s 3-star review continued, “an era where films went big and swung wide.”
Arian Moayed, Este Haim, Elizabeth Berkley and Kaia Gerber also star. The dark comedy was penned by Jack Stanley, the scribe behind last year’s thriller The Passenger.
Minghella made his directorial debut with 2018’s Teen Spirit, but horror fans will recognize the actor/filmmaker for his roles in Spiral: From the Book of Saw and Alexandre Aja’s Horns.
