‘Kill Bill: Vol 1’ is a Feminist Battle Royale for the Ages [The Lady Killers Podcast]

Of all the tragic backstories in horror, few are so heartbreaking as that of O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu). At the tender age of nine, O-Ren hid under the bed while members of the Tokyo Yakuza brutally murdered her mother and father. Two years later, O-Ren got her revenge. Posing as a child sex worker, the tiny assassin murdered the person who ordered the hits, Mr. Matsumoto, with a samurai sword. Acquiring a taste for murder, O-Ren would go on to hone her skills and become one of the world’s premiere assassins. By the time the Bride (Uma Thurman) seeks her own revenge, O-Ren has risen through the underworld ranks and now leads the Tokyo Yakuza herself.
But getting to O-Ren will not be easy. The imposing crime boss now commands a personal army of skilled fighters known as the Crazy 88. By her side sit two equally impressive women, the young and psychotic Gogo Yubari (Chiaki Kuriyama) and O-Ren’s personal lawyer Sofie Fatale (Julie Dreyfus). Quentin Tarantino‘s bombastic film concludes with a jaw-dropping battle royale that sees the Bride square off against this horde of assassins before a snowy final showdown in a stunning Japanese garden.
