‘Cruel Summer’ Season 3 in Development Two Years After the Show’s Cancellation

It was back in December 2023 that we learned of the cancellation of the television series “Cruel Summer” after just two seasons, but dead TV shows have showed surprising amounts of resilience in recent years. And on that note, “Cruel Summer” is coming back for Season 3!
Variety reports that Season 1 star Olivia Holt will be back for “Cruel Summer” Season 3, which is currently in development at Freeform and Hulu. In fact, Variety also notes, “Holt would star in and executive produce the new season, reprising the role of Kate Wallis from Season 1.”
The Freeform series premiered in 2021 and spawned a second season in 2023. Season 2 turned the show into an anthology series, centered on new characters. Perhaps that’s the reason why the second season to the mega popular first season wasn’t as well received, with Lionsgate TV now pivoting back to the original characters and storylines for the third season.
Cori Uchida and Adam Lash will be the showrunners of “Cruel Summer” Season 3. Jessica Biel is on board to executive produce the new season, Variety also notes in today’s report.
Season 1 took place over three summers in the ’90s when a beautiful and popular teen goes missing, and a seemingly unrelated girl transforms from a sweet and awkward outlier to the most popular girl in town, eventually becoming the most despised person in America.
The two seasons of “Cruel Summer” featured different casts and different characters, but followed the same unique approach of telling their stories across three different timelines.
