‘Darkwood 2’ Announced for Steam and Game Pass [Trailer]

The minds behind the Pathologic series in Ice-Pick Lodge have announced the sequel to 2014’s Darkwood in Darkwood 2. The announcement was made at the ID@XBOX Fall 2025 showcase, with Hooded Horse handling publishing duties, taking over from the first game’s publisher Crunching Koalas.

Darkwood 2 will take place years after the original game developed by Acid Wizard, and throws players into more peril amidst the scorched deserts of a dying sea. Roam freely around a rich, dangerous world by day, securing what resources you can before seeking shelter at night. The sequel brings with it new lands and waters to explore, and new creatures to fear. The story, characters, and unfolding events of Darkwood 2 stand on their own, and can be enjoyed without having experienced the first game.

In the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse, the dying Aral Sea has become the site of an anomaly – an eerie forest that swallows everything in its path. No one knows where it came from, or why – retribution, perhaps, for humanity’s abuse of nature.

All around lie the ruins of a vanished world – deserted villages, rusting ships marooned in sand, derelict oil rigs, power stations, and factories on the verge of collapse. A secret biological lab sits in silence on a remote island as roving gangs of looters, bikers, and former soldiers control the remaining population through fear. Nomads travel through these lands with no rest or respite, day or night – even walls can’t guarantee safety.

“The original Darkwood is a unique experience in horror — mixing resource management and strategic survival into a rarely used top-down horror format,” says Hooded Horse CEO Tim Bender. “We’re honored to be part of the sequel, and to be working with such a great team.”

Currently, Darkwood 2 is slated for release on Steam and the Microsoft Store, as well as Game Pass.
