Halloween Graveyard Smash Song ‘Monster Mash’ Getting Animated Feature at Miramax

Since 1962, the graveyard smash hit song “Monster Mash” caught on in a flash to become a defining song of Halloween. Per Deadline, the catchy Halloween tune will become an animated feature for Miramax.
Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman, behind such haunted hits as Netflix’s “Wednesday“ and The Addams Family animated movies at MGM, has optioned the rights from Reservoir and Capizzi Music Co.
“Monster Mash,“ performed by Bobby “Boris“ Pickett, who co-wrote it with Lenny Capizzi, has been streamed more than 500 million times worldwide with reported annual $1 million royalties. The tune chronicled a mad scientist’s creation rising from his slab to perform a new dance craze, attracting all manner of monsters to a dance party.
Said Glickman: “For more than 60 years, nothing has said Halloween quite like the ‘Monster Mash.‘ We’re thrilled to be entrusted by the Pickett and Capizzi families and to be partnering with Reservoir Media to bring this iconic song to life as an animated musical for all audiences. It’s a project that celebrates the fun and spirit of the original — and should become a perennial ‘graveyard smash‘ for years to come.”
Monster Mash aims to bring spooky family fun in animated movie form, but Miramax is also reviving the Scary Movie franchise next year.
Stay tuned for more on Monster Mash, but be prepared to have the song stuck in your head until then.
