We’ve all heard the story of George A. Romero‘s commercial for Capcom’s Resident Evil 2, as well as the failed film adaptation that was explored in Brandon Salisbury‘s George A. Romero’s Resident Evil. But for fans, there’s one mystery that’s been left unsolved for the past 27 years that you might not have even thought of: The mask used for the game’s Japanese and European cover art. And as luck would have it, Salisbury himself shed light on this one.

Over on Facebook, Salisbury unveiled the original prosthetic that was used for the cover, which he acquired along with some of the prosthetics used in Romero’s Resident Evil 2 commercial.

“I am super pleased to be able to share this,” says Salisbury. “I have acquired some of the applications used in George A. Romero’s RESIDENT EVIL 2 commercial, including one of the most iconic pieces, used for the cover of the Japanese and European versions. The rest will be divided up to various organizations that I’ll be discussing with in a week, so that they are preserved and made available for the public.”

Andy over at Residence of Evil dove into things to find a bit more info about the mask. It turns out that the mask was actually used in Romero’s commercial, as various behind the scenes photos show the actor wearing the mask. For the cover art, Capcom simply took a picture of the zombie, turned it black and white, and upped the contrast.

The condition of the mask is a bit rough around the edges, but after nearly 30 years, that’s kind of expected. It’s still a really cool find, and definitely one of the more interesting finds for Resident Evil.

And if you haven’t checked out George A. Romero’s Resident Evil, you can watch it now on Prime Video and Apple TV.

Big thanks to Time Extension for the heads up.
