Rob Zombie Shares Memory of Directing Michael Madsen in ‘CSI: Miami’ Episode
The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Michael Madsen, who passed away at the age of 67 on July 3. Madsen is of course best known for his films with Quentin Tarantino, including Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, and The Hateful Eight, but what you might have forgotten is that Madsen was also directed by Rob Zombie once upon a time.
It was back in 2010 that Rob Zombie directed an episode of the series “CSI: Miami,” which was the sixteenth episode of the eighth season. It was titled “L.A.,” and it came along just one year after Rob Zombie wrapped up his time on the Halloween franchise. Before he returned to the director’s chair for The Lords of Salem, Zombie first made his mark on the world of “CSI.”
In the horror-themed episode of the Miami-based spinoff series, “Horatio and Delko must travel to Los Angeles when a secret from Jesse’s past may allow a killer to go free.”
The episode featured guest stars including past Rob Zombie collaborators William Forsythe, Malcolm McDowell, Kristina Klebe, and Sheri Moon Zombie, and it also marked Zombie’s first and only collaboration with Michael Madsen. In a post on Instagram this afternoon, Zombie recalls the filming of the 2010 episode and shares a fun Madsen anecdote from the set.
Zombie writes, “Bummed to hear about the death of Michael Madsen. I only worked with him once on an episode of CSI: Miami. I had heard he was difficult to deal with but we had a great time together. Super cool and very professional. He said he was happy to be back on an organized professional set. I guess he had many bad experiences over the years.”
“During one scene we were shooting with Michael and David Caruso, Michael took me aside and said ‘he (Caruso) thinks he’s the cool guy in the scene, but I’m the cool guy in the scene.’ So true,” Zombie continues. “Another time he whispered to me that if Johnathan Togo kept adding smart ass comments to the scene he was going to break a chair over his head.
“I could tell he wasn’t joking.”
